Appalachia has experienced disproportionate consequences of the opioid epidemic. The Appalachian Node of the NIH Clinical Trials Network will conduct opioid-related research, focusing on underserved populations.
The opioid crisis has severe negative consequences, including overdoses, neonatal abstinence syndrome and death. While rural populations are at high risk, they are often not included in research studies. This center helps to ensure that research addressing the opioid epidemic helps those who are most impacted by working with clinician practices throughout Appalachia to enroll patients in national studies related to opioid use and treatment.
Want to help guide research related to opioids? The research team is looking to identify a patient or caregiver to join the Appalachian Node’s Stakeholder Advisory Board to help guide the research node’s research, including shaping messaging for studies and identifying issues that might make it easier or harder to enroll study participants.
• Ages 21 and up • Live in Western PA or WV • Knowledgeable of what it is like to struggle with substance abuse related to opioids; to be a caretaker for someone who has struggled with opioids; and/or to seek health care while dealing with chronic pain or substance abuse
